The brakes that are fitted to winches on oil platforms in the North Sea have to withstand an extremely harsh environment that includes salt water and oil.
Sometime the demands on working life are exceptional; the brake fitted to the motor in an industrial gate has to survive 200,000 braking cycles with just 0.1 mm of wear.
And the brake fitted to a lawnmower has to be able to stop the motor in a fraction of a second from 20,000 revolutions per minute.
