Multi-Disc Brakes |
General characteristics of multi-disc brakes (a variant of disc brakes).
Divided into two main categories:
Wet multi-disc brakes
- A number of brake discs are immersed in an oil bath with friction linings that are matched to the fluid, often Hypoid oil.
- The oil is often cooled by circulating it through an oil cooler, which causes energy losses, making the brakes heavier to operate.
- Another characteristic that can occur with this type of brake is uneven braking until the brakes have reached full power or torque. This depends on the type of wet multi-disc brakes chosen.
- One big advantage is that the brakes are extremely well protected from dirt since they are totally enclosed. They could be called "maintenance-free". However there can be problems for the next owner if the vehicle has put in many hours of service.
Dry multi-disc brakes
- A number of brake discs that are not surrounded by oil. The friction lining is chosen for air cooling.
- The characteristics are more similar to those of conventional disc brakes, but disc brake application is smoother.
